INTRODUCTION

In the following chart, the following abbreviations are used:

After these words, the default vertical position is given, then following a comma the four handle positioning numbers.

Wherever different "normal" and flipped versions of a symbol exist, they should be used, and the relevant configuration of Symbol Options selected. All symbols are 24-point Petrucci except where otherwise stated. If you want a playback effect, you're on your own.

I highly recommend these articulations. They will prove well worth the time (less than an hour) that it takes to configure them from this chart.
Start w. a clean Finale file (for Mac, hold down the option key while double-clicking the Finale icon) that has no articulations in it to start. Create the articulations from this chart, then select "Save Library" from the file menu. The library type is, of course "Articulations."

NOTE: If a whole-note articulation does not position properly, try flipping the note's "virtual" stem, using any of the methods Finale provides for altering stem directions.

ARTICULATION MEASUREMENTS IN EVPU's

Designed for the stem ends of quarter-notes, half-notes, and beamed notes (flagged notes need different vertical positioning):

FERMATAS-- for the stem end of any note, and that also will work for whole notes.

STEMMED NOTES-- flagged or not.

FLAGGED NOTES-- stem ends

WHOLE NOTES-- see the note above about how to use them

CENTERED 8va AND 8vb SIGNS

HARMONIC CIRCLE-- stem end (flagged or not)

PIZZICATO AND MARTELLATO: Artics requiring the Crescendo font from Casady and Greene

X-SHAPED NOTEHEADS (for Sprechstimme etc.)

ACCIDENTALS

In pre-20th c. music, if you have a sharp following a flat in the same measure (or vice-versa) you have to cancel the first accidental before applying the second; that is, the second note will have a natural sign preceding the regular accidental. The same rule applies if you have a double-sharp followed by a single-sharp (or double flat to single flat). Since Finale's accidental engine doesn't provide this notation, it has to be entered as an articulation, which will position automatically with these settings:
