This course examines changing ways of seeing and understanding
the nature of humans, society, and the cosmos from the early
nineteenth century to the contemporary period. It also looks
at the assumptions about reality and meaning which shape these
views. And finally, we'll try to understand why changes occurred
and what difference they made.
Reading and discussing the works of scientists,
philosophers, political theorists, and novelists and looking
at major artistic movements provide the primary basis for
examining these issues.
