This course deals with remembering and forgetting. We'll look at memory from two different perspectives. First, we'll examine the way people understood the operation of memory (how people thought memory worked) and the techniques they used to cultivate it in the classical, medieval, and modern periods. Then we'll explore the personal and the social construction of memory--who remembers, what they remember and forget, and how they preserve their memories, using the American Civil War and the Holocaust as working examples. We'll close with a look at the dynamic of remembering 9/11.
