Mystery Club

This summer there are many mysteries to be solved and I need YOU to crack the case! What do you need to solve these mysteries? Your five senses! Become a sense detective with me. Your senses will help you identify the clues. Use your listening skills. Shh! Did you hear that? Clue number one, the fun has just begun. Mmm, taste a mystery treat. Clue number two, this snack is just for you! Use your sense of sight to see the clues around you. Clue number three, what’s that you see? Use your sense of touch if you dare! Clue number four, is it rough, smooth, or does it have hair? It’s time to use your nose to smell the last clue. Clue number five, use your super sniffer, that’s what you’ll do! So hurry sense detectives! This is where you need to be, unraveling the mystery of your five senses with me as we learn about them through stories and exploration.

Passport To the World (An Encore)

Use your imagination to come along on a whirlwind “trip” that will span six continents. We will see what it would be like to travel the world by hot air balloon, planes and trains. Come with us and have high tea with the Queen in England. Travel to France and see the famous landmarks of Paris and the beauty of the French countryside. Explore the mysteries of India on the back of an elephant as we learn about Indian customs and traditions. Visit the great continent of Asia and collect artifacts from Japan and China. Dance to the rhythms of African drums, learn to count in Swahili, and go on a virtual safari when we travel to Central Africa. Create Australian Aborigine art, learn to throw a boomerang and discover secrets of the “land down under”. Take in sights and sounds from around the world and meet intriguing people along the way. Get your passport ready and your imaginations packed!

Turtles, Lizards, and Toads Oh My!!

What has a dry scaly body, lives on every continent except Antarctica, has a tongue that helps them smell, and has snakes as its closest relative? Did you guess a lizard? Are you curious about frogs, snakes, lizards, salamanders, alligators and crocodiles? If so, come discover our planet’s most amazing and ancient animals. A flying dragon uses wing like flaps to glide through the air. The paradoxical frog grows backwards! It shrinks from a large tadpole down to a two inch frog. Alligators can survive for nearly two years without a meal. Salamanders range in length from one inch to five feet! How do fascinating traits like these help these unique creatures survive in their environment? What might happen if their environment was changed? Dive into the world of amphibians and reptiles through observation, literature, games and art. Use your imagination to design an undiscovered reptile or amphibian. Transform our classroom into a world filled with your creations in their unique environments.

Weather Watchers

Do you wonder what the weather will bring each day? Get ready to recreate every kind of weather right inside the classroom. We will get swept up in a tornado, shiver in a blizzard, feel the wind of a hurricane, get drenched in a tsunami and dodge lightening in a rainstorm. How would you like to create clouds, rainbows and crystal snowflakes? Learn how to use the Beaufort scale to grade the wind from a gentle breeze to a hurricane. We will even explore some weather lore from days past. You will learn to forecast the weather and calculate temperature in either Fahrenheit or Celsius. As budding meteorologists we’ll make our own barometers, anemometers, hygrometers, rain gauges and weather vanes. If you find yourself watching the weather, gazing at the clouds, splashing in rain puddles or catching snowflakes on your tongue, you’ll love learning about the world’s weather.

It's Easy Being Green

The talk of the town lately is living green. What does it mean to really be green? In this class students will calculate their carbon footprint and then investigate ways to reduce it. We will learn that being green is a lifestyle choice, which will help the longevity of the planet. This class will give students the tools needed to make living green easy. Students will learn how to reduce waste by recycling and composting. Also, they will find out the benefits of alternative energy by creating solar ovens and experimenting with wind and water energy. Guests will come and share their ideas and tips for living green and caring for the planet. Students will have a solar oven cook-off, an alternative energy expo, a recycled art show and create a kids’ guidebook to green living to share their ideas of a green future. Even Kermit the Frog would have to sing a new tune after taking this class.

Math Alive!

Have you wondered how you could measure the height of a mountain?  Do you like to build things with your hands?  Are you talented at creating your own games?  Do you often wonder when you’ll ever use the “stuff” you learn in math class?  If you answered yes to any or all of these questions, then this is the class for you!  Join us as we explore how to make math come alive.  We’ll dive into geometry by building kites and folding intricate origami.  We’ll discover patterns in and make predictions about numbers using bungee cords and Barbies.  We’ll look at games from around the world (and familiar ones too) and find out what it takes to make a game worth playing.  You’ll even get to create your very own games showing off your creativity and logic skills and play them with your classmates.  Just bring your brain and your enthusiasm and together we’ll find out just how fun math can be!

“Tis Almost Fairy Time”

“Dost thou like to act? Come join the Summer G.T. Shakespearean Players in Fairyland as we perform scenes from William Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream in full Elizabethan costume. There, Oberon and Titania (king and queen of the fairies) are quarreling which causes chaos everywhere! Four young lovers are under a spell which causes many misunderstandings, a band of terrible actors puts on a silly, hilarious play for Duke Theseus’ wedding that is meant to be a tragedy, one actor is turned into a donkey, and the mischievous fairy, Puck is to blame for it all! While rehearsing the play—which will be performed for two audiences—you will learn acting techniques that will lead to a “polished” performance in just three weeks! You will also paint backdrops and explore the Renaissance, fairy lore, and Shakespeare’s life. So come join our merry little band as we have fun with one of Shakespeare’s most loved comedies!
