The paradigm of sustainable development seeks levels and types of economic activity compatible with protection of natural systems and the environment. This course investigates the concept of sustainable development in the context of African wildlife and ecotourism. Taught by an economist and a biologist, the intent of the course is to provide an interdisciplinary study of how human demands for jobs and prosperity can coexist with integrity of natural systems. Extensive fieldwork in Zimbabwe will complement an initial review of the conceptual foundations that economics and biology provide to the paradigm of sustainable development. 2 CC Units of Credit - Professors Walt Hecox and Bruce Byers; Zimbabwe Field Trip Paraprofessional Eric Hecox.
