During the 4 weeks that the class will be "in the field" in Africa, you will come into contact with a very wide range of people, ideas and positions. Some will appear distant from your own values and norms; you may even "dislike" some individuals. It is extremely important that every field speaker and guest be shown respect, both personal and related to their ideas. A spirited but respectful questioning of ideas and positions is expected! Sarcasm, body language which conveys displeasure, and other forms of disrespect are unacceptable! Please remember that your behavior will reflect on all of Colorado College now and for years to come, so plan on leaving behind a positive image of CC!
It will also be true that the intensity of the 4 weeks of living together in Africa will, at times, come to the surface. There will be places in Africa for individuals to get away from others, recreate, reflect, study, and contemplate. Successful operation of the course will require that each of us goes most of the distance to respect other students, as well as find ways to help with class organization, travel, "on time" departures, lugggage, etc.
