  • Activities in the Victoria Falls area will be carried out either as individuals or with the entire class, not as teams
  • First day at the Falls will involve individual touring of main tourist sites in the area (Falls, Stanley Hotel, craft shops, etc.), with the following assignments required individually of each student:
  • interview 3 tourists and 2 local residents, asking them a standard set of questions which we will put together as a class, and which you will have copies of, designed to gather information on the economic dimensions of tourism in the area 
  • visit at least one tourism company office in Vic Falls town, and obtain brochures, price lists, and other information on the tourist activities and packages they offer 
  • Evening: attend traditional dance and music performance at the Falls Craft Village

  • Second day in the area will involve an all-day game drive in Zambezi National Park to observe wildlife and ecology; evening: dinner at "The Boma" Restaurant, which specializes in African game meat

  • Activities in the Binga area will be carried out either as individuals or with the entire class, not as teams
  • Afternoon of our travel day to Binga, July 12, (will not require entire day) will be spent visiting the Binga Craft Market and/or being briefed on the Zambezi Society's Botanical Sites Conservation project in the area

  • First full day in Binga, July 13, will be spent visiting botanical sites in the area and meeting with local residents working with the Zambezi Society on their conservation

  • Second day in Binga, 14 July, will be spent investigating craft production in the area, which is famous for crafts made by the Tonga people (e.g. drums, stools, baskets). We will likely break into several groups and go in different directions to learn something about sources of the raw materials (e.g. wood, palm fiber) for these crafts and their ecological sustainability; the logistics of this day will be planned in part after we arrive in Binga.

  • Friday, 16 July: students will have an opportunity to visit organizations and individuals met during first days in Harare to discuss fieldwork, gather further information, as individuals or teams

  • Activities in the area will be carried out either as individuals or with the entire class, not as teams
  • Travel day to Mvuradonha, 18 July, Sunday (AM travel, we should arrive by about noon), will be spent exploring the area on foot on the many hiking trails that start from the H.Q. Camp

  • First full day in Mvuradonha, 19 July, Monday, will be spent touring the area and meeting with local residents to learn about wildlife, forests, CAMPFIRE, and rural development in the Muzarabani area
