Course Credit:

This is a two-block course (each block being equivalent to a 4-semester hour course). One of these credits will be EC 210 – Topics in Economics: Sustainable Development – African Wildlife, Ecotourism and Sustainable Development. The other credit will be EV 141 – Topics in Environmental Science – African Wildlife, Ecotourism and Sustainable Development (at CC serving as a laboratory/field course towards the Natural Science Distribution requirement).

Dates:

This two-Block Summer Session course (Blocks A & B) will start Monday June 14th and end on Friday July 23rd, 1999.

Locations:

We plan to spend approximately 10 days of initial "classroom" study on the CC campus in Colorado Springs (June 14th through approx. Wednesday June 23rd).

The "field trip" portion of the course will include a departure from Colorado Springs on approximately Thursday June 24th, arrival in Harare, Zimbabwe Saturday June 26th, an initial "recovery and orientation" period in Harare Saturday June 26th through Wednesday June 30th, field travel outside of Harare Thursday July 1st through Thursday July 22nd, and end-of-course departure from Harare to the US (or possible stay-over for personal travel in Southern Africa after the course) Friday July 23rd, arrival back in Denver Saturday July 24th.

Course Enrollment through the CC Registrar:

Starting December 1, 1998 students can register for this course, either at the Registrar’s Office in Armstrong Hall or in the Summer Session Office on campus. Consent of Instructor is required, meaning a signed Drop-Add Slip. Please obtain this signature from Prof. Walt Hecox, Economics Dept., Palmer 104. If you are off campus, this can be done via e-mail (whecox@ColoradoCollege.edu) or by phone (719-389-6413). Please note that enrolled students must also make a non-refundable deposit in order to guarantee their participation in the course (see the section below on "Deposit to Guarantee Course Participation").

Minimum Course Size:

Similar to all Colorado College Summer Session courses, the college reserves the right to cancel a course if it has insufficient registration (in which case the entire deposit will be returned). For this course we need a minimum of 12 students, and will take a maximum of 17-20 students).

Costs:

Tuition for this two-block course will be $1,280 per block for a total of $2,560. Colorado College students who have not used their Summer Session "wild card" can reduce the tuition cost to $1,280 by using their one-time "wild card" for this course.

For students who enroll and make the required non-refundable deposit by April 1, 1999 (or possibly earlier if course enrollment is over-subscribed), the Program Fee for this course will be $3,300. Colorado College students meeting this deadline for a deposit will receive an award from the Office of the President of $500, reducing their Program Fee to $2,800. The Program Fee covers airline fees for group travel as well as Zimbabwe room, board, in-country travel, and national park entrance fees.

For enrolled students who do not make the required non-refundable deposit by April 1, 1999, we cannot guarantee either that the Program Fee can be held to $3,300 or that there will be a $500 award from the Office of the President. If space remains in the course, students making deposits after this date may have to pay a somewhat higher Program Fee. This will happen if the group airline fare rates rise for students not making a deposit by April 1, 1999 (or possibly earlier if course enrollment is oversubscribed); such additional costs will have to be passed on to these students.

Financial Aid:

Colorado College students taking this course, in addition to the Office of the President Award of $500 towards the Program Fee, can apply for Intercultural Program Financial Aid; the due date for turning in applications is February 1, 1999, with awards announced on February 15, 1999. For details contact the Summer Session Office.

Deposit to Guarantee Course Participation:

The Colorado College Summer Session requires that students who are taking a field course make a non-refundable deposit of $500. Part of this deposit is used to make non-refundable deposits on international airline tickets. Deposits must also be made in Zimbabwe on lodging and transportation.

IN ORDER TO GUARANTEE YOUR PARTICIPATION IN THIS CLASS and to assure students inexpensive airfares, this non-refundable deposit of $500 must be received by no later than April 1, 1999.

If enrollment in the course through the Registrar becomes over-subscribed earlier that April 1, 1999, then the Summer Session Office will contact enrolled students and ask for an earlier non-refundable deposit to guarantee participation in the class. Students on the Wait List will next be given the opportunity to make a deposit and guarantee their course participation. Thus, students may have to make non-refundable deposits prior to April 1, 1999 or risk losing their priority for course participation.

Contingency for Course Cancellation:

Colorado College above all else, intends to protect its students on foreign study programs from unsafe situations. In the unlikely case that conditions in Zimbabwe are not deemed totally safe for the field-trip portion of this course, then we reserve the right (and responsibility) to cancel the entire course. In such a situation we will endeavor to make complete refunds to enrolled students.

If during the field trip portion of this course it is determined that conditions have become unsafe, then we reserve the right to cancel any remaining portion of the field trip portion of this course. In such a case alternative arrangements will be made depart from Zimbabwe and conclude the course.

A Colorado College graduate, and frequent CC visiting faculty member, lives in Harare, Zimbabwe where he is on the faculty of the University of Zimbabwe. Solomon Nkiwane is also the Zimbabwean Director of the ACM Zimbabwe Semester Program. We will seek the advice of Prof. Nkiwane to help us make any necessary decisions about these issues.

Students and their parents should feel confident that Colorado College will take every precaution and action to make this course both safe and an enjoyable, challenging learning experience.

Trip Cancellation Insurance:

We strongly encourage students taking this course to purchase individual policies covering trip interruption/cancellation. These policies reimburse the student/their family for out-of-pocket costs of an airline ticket in the case of illness or family emergency. Enrolled students will be provided with information on such policies.

International Student Identity Card/Basic Health and Accident Insurance:

Each enrolled student will be required to purchase a $20 International Student Identity Card from the Council on International Educational Exchange. The CC International Programs Office can take the photo ID and issue these cards prior to or at the start of the course.

This ID provides very basic insurance for sickness, accident, and emergency medical evacuation. Extended coverage is also available for an additional modest premium. This insurance covers in-hospital expenses, NOT doctor’s office visits and prescriptions. We require this ID so that in case of a medical emergency, families can be assured that there is medical evacuation coverage.

Passport, Visa, and Vaccination Shots:

Each enrolled student will need a valid passport from his or her country of citizenship. Warning: it can take 6-8 weeks to obtain a passport or renew one that is expired.

No visa is required for US citizens to enter Zimbabwe for the duration of this course. A tourist visa will be issued at the airport upon arrival. If you plan any travel after the course is over in countries neighboring Zimbabwe, you must check on details of any visa requirements and plan far ahead to obtain the necessary approvals. There will be no time while you are in Harare or in other parts of Zimbabwe during the course to obtain such visas!

A number of vaccination shots are required to travel to Zimbabwe. Enrolled students will be provided information several months before the start of the course, and should schedule these shots well prior to the first day of the course. There will not be time while we are in Colorado Springs for you to complete the scheduled shots, as a waiting time between some shots is necessary.

SO PLAN AHEAD, GET STARTED EARLY ON PASSPORT, VISA, AND VACCINATION ISSUES!!!
