TRANSFER CREDITS & PREREQUISITES
back to students

It is the individual Art Major’s responsibility, before embarking on a program of off-campus study, to check with the Registrar and the Art Department Chair to find out how much credit off-campus courses will receive and which courses will be counted toward the Art Major. The Department cannot make a determination about the appropriateness of any course for the Major unless the student provides a full, official description of the course in question. The Art Department may decide to reserve judgment regarding the acceptability of certain courses until the student returns to campus and presents class work for evaluation (i.e., a portfolio for studio courses and papers, assignments and notes for art history courses). Students, therefore, should save all class work and related materials. Students who are considering an Art Major and non-majors taking credits in Art off campus should follow the same procedure.

Although off-campus programs are often a valuable enhancement to the Art Major, the Department strongly recommends that students take as many courses toward the major as possible on campus.

Only three art history courses taken off campus may count towards the Art History Concentration and only three art studio courses taken off campus may count towards the Art Studio Concentration.

Transfer students should consult with the Art Department regarding credits from other institutions. We require that transfer students take at least four Colorado College courses plus senior seminar/senior thesis in the area of their concentration (art history or art studio) regardless of how many credits in art history or art studio they may have taken elsewhere.

ACM London/Florence Program

Majors may use only one (1) unit art history course toward the major.

ACM Chicago Arts Program

No credit toward the Art Major except, upon petition in unusual cases, for the internship. Documentation, including papers and/or portfolio, must be presented with the petition.

All Other Off-Campus Programs

If the Department approves a particular course for credit toward the major, the Department will grant only the number of units granted by the Colorado College Registrar. Students should be aware that 1 unit = 4 semester hours (N.B., courses taken in ACM programs generally are awarded 1 unit of credit each). The Department will, upon petition, consider waiving ¼ unit if a student falls short of the requirement by this amount.

AP Courses

A student who has earned two units of art history credit (equivalent to AH 112) through an AP course may use these units as a prerequisite for upper level art history courses. However, AP credits may not be used towards the art major.

HS 120 (Renaissance Culture)

HS 120, if taken in a year when the course includes a substantial art history component, may be used as a prerequisite for upper level art history courses. Qualified students who have completed HS 120 may (with consent of instructor) take the second half of AH 112 (Introduction to Art History) as a one unit course. However, art majors are reminded that HS 120 may not be used towards the major.

AH 111 (History of Architecture)

We recommend that students not take both AH 112 and AH 111, because the two courses cover much of the same material, especially during the first block. In special cases students who have completed AH 112 will be allowed to take (with consent of instructor) the second half of AH 111 as a one unit course. Likewise, students who have taken AH 111 may (with consent of instructor) be allowed to take the second half of AH 112 as a one unit course.
