WELCOME TO THE ART DEPARTMENT SHOP
The CC Art Department maintains a shop for studio work. This is a 2000 square foot facility designed and built to serve studio art students and to house classes in sculpture, design, and architecture. It consists of several discreet areas for woodworking, metalworking, and working clay or plaster, as well as a small classroom / slide presentation room / office, and private shop space for the resident sculptor. The space is flexible and can accommodate a variety of classes; the main room has been used for everything from creating huge murals to use as a simple classroom. The shop stocks sculptural materials, some scrap, some for sale; there is a good selection of woods, clay, plaster, usually stone, and scrap steel. There is a staff member, the Art Shop Supervisor, assigned to the shop. He serves as technical advisor, maintains the equipment, and ensures safety. As most users are relatively inexperienced, the safety policy is that students may not use the power tools unless the supervisor, course instructor, or the resident sculptor is in the shop. Also, they must first be checked out on each tool to be sure that they understand its use and the pertinent safety issues. The shop often supports several classes in any given block. The senior studio majors are free to use it in preparing their thesis shows throughout the year, and painting classes often require students to come in and build stretchers, panels, and frames. This is in addition to sculpture and design classes meeting here. Consequently, shop use is reserved for Art students and faculty engaged in academic work. Much more information about the shop is available. Please call Andrew Tirado at 719-389-6377 or E-mail Andrew.Tirado@ColoradoCollege.edu with questions or requests for additional information. |
