Saturday, May 1:     Leave Packard Hall by C. C. Bus to Denver, promptly at 8:30
                                  Be at Packard by 8:15 at the latest!

Be sure to bring your passport, your international student ID, airline ticket, journal and
guidebook.

Probably the safest way to carry money is in the form of traveler's checks. Upon arrival in Rome, you will be able to exchange some checks for lire at the airport; there are also many Visa money machines in Rome, including one very near the Villa Bassi.

The safest way to carry money, passports and other valuables in Italy is in a money pouch, fanny pack, inner vest pocket or some place concealed by an outer item of clothing.

On Sunday, we will each receive a bus pass, valid for the entire month of May, at a cost of 50,000 lire each.

Students are expected to attend all required events promptly. Missing events and/or other breaches of college rules will result in your being sent home.


Tentative Schedule in Rome
Sunday, May 2

Arrival. We will be meet by a charter bus which will take us to our pensione. We will then have lunch as a group and take a bus trip around the city. We'll pause to walk along the Via Appia and see the sites on the Janiculine Hill.
 


Monday, May 3

8:50 a.m.             Meet at the main entrance to theVillaFarnesina

9:30 a.m.             Report on Raphael frescoes in the Farnesina (John and Mike)

                            Nearby Church of Santa Maria in Trastevere (optional)
                            Have lunch on your own.
                            Take a bus (#75) from Trastevere to the Largo Argentina, walk to the Capitoline

1:30 p.m.             Meet in the center of the Capitoline Hill for a visit to the Roman Forum.
3:00 p.m.             Entrance to the Palatine Hill
3:40 p.m.             Palatine Museum

Other suggestions:   The Colosseum is open until 1 hour before sunset.
 
 

Tuesday, May 4

8:50 a.m.             Meet at the Ara Pacis
9:00 a.m.             Report on the Ara Pacis (Eden and Kathryn)

9:45                     Walk as a group to the Ponte Sant Angelo, past the Castel Sant' Angelo
                            and down Via della Conciliazione to St. Peter's Basilica
                            Visit the Piazza, Church and Treasury

                            Free time, lunch

2:00                     Meet for a guided tour of the excavations beneath St. Peter's

Wednesday, May 5

8:30                     Meet at the Cisterna (faculty hotel) to take public transportation to the
                            Villa of Hadrian (Villa Adriana )
                            Bus, Metro to the Tiburtina Station, then bus to Villa.

                            Take local bus into Tivoli for lunch

2:00                     Meet at the entrance to the Villa d'Este to visit the 16th century gardens

Thursday, May 6

10:00 a.m.             Optional visit to the Sancta Sanctorum (Holy of Holies, the Pope's
                              private chapel) Meet at the Lateran, exact place to be announced.

1:30 p.m.             Meet at the Palazzo Massimo alle Terme, Museum of Antiquities in the Piazza
                            del Cinquecento near the main railroad station.
2:30 p.m.             Visit to the Roman paintings from the Villa of Livia (in the same Museum)

4:00 p.m.             Santa Prassede, Class Report on the Zeno Chapel (Titania and Jared)
                            Santa Maria degli Angeli

Other suggestions:   Michelangelo's Moses in San Pietro in Vincoli, Santa Maria Maggiore

Since the central city is a pedestrian zone on Sundays, this would be a good time to explore it, (Trajan's Forum and Markets and/or temples by the river, Theater of Marcellus, churches around Piazza Bocca della Verita, for example.)

Suggestion: Walk along the Corso to the Piazza del Popolo, visit the church of Santa Maria del Popolo.

Wednesday, May 12

Rest of the afternoon free

You might want to visit the Borghese Gardens and/or other museums in the vicinity: Villa Giulia, Museum of Modern Art.

Thursday, May 13

By 12:00 noon Check out of pensione, we will take taxis to airport in groups to arrive at the airport by 1:00 at the latest.

Leave Rome, Fiumicino Airport, Alitalia 642, 14:55 p.m.
Arrive Newark, Thursday, May, 13, 18:20 p.m.
Leave Newark, Continental 322 at 20:10
Arrive DIA at about 22:30.

C. C. bus will meet us at DIA and drive us back to Packard Hall, if the plane is on time, we should arrive back at Packard Hall at about midnight.


Other things to see when you can.

In our neighborhood in Trastevere don't miss the Church of San Francesco a Ripa with the beautiful Bernini sculpture of the Blessed Lodovica Albertoni. The Church of Santa Cecilia in Trastevere has the wonderful frescoes of the Last Judgement by Cavallini. The frescoes can be seen on Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 10:30 to 11:30.
