Students in the Forum Romanum
ROME THE CITY
AH 275
A unique course, Rome the City, will be offered by
the Art Department during Block 8. Taught by Professors Edith Kirsch and
Ruth Kolarik, the first two weeks of the course will be spent on campus,
then the class will reconvene in Rome. For ten days, we will exchange a
dark classroom and slides for the glories of the eternal city, now spruced
up for the year 2000. Students will each research a work of art in the
library here and then discuss it with the class in Rome. We will visit
the ancient forum and explore the Vatican from the tomb of St. Peter in
a Roman cemetery deep beneath the floor to the top of the dome. Our class
will have a private visit to the Sistine Chapel and the Vatican Stanze.
Sipping cappuccino in the Piazza Navona, we will gaze on Bernini's fountain
and reflect on the history of that spot which has been a Roman circus,
a Baroque piazza and a fashionable meeting place.
