Preschool Curriculum

The educational philosophy in the Colorado College Children’s Center Preschool is based upon several schools of thought, always incorporating literature, music and movement in whatever method we choose. We use the following methods in our curriculum planning:

1. Emergent curriculum- in this method the teachers respond to and develop curriculum plans generated from the ideas and interests of the children.

2. Teacher guided curriculum- based on themes or "units" centered on seasons, holidays or other recurring events (Balloon classic, apple/pumpkin harvest, etc.). These ideas may be used year after year because they have proven to be interesting and effective. A teacher-guided curriculum is a good jumping off place for emergent curriculum.

3. Literature based curriculum- many of our activities are centered on classic children’s literature, nursery rhymes, poems, songs or folk tales. The children in our class enjoy hearing their favorites, and respond well to activities centered on great stories. For example; we might read On Top of Spaghetti, sing the song, read other books or poems about pasta, cook pasta for science, use pasta for art, count and sort different types of pasta for math, etc.

Welcome to our classroom. Please contact us anytime.
