Dr. Gino Strada
"War,
Medicine and Human Rights:
The Denial of Medical Care
as Weapon of Mass Destruction"
Thursday, May 18
8 pm.
Gaylord Hall
(on the CC campus)
Free
and open to the public.
World-renown
war surgeon, author and human rights advocate Dr. Gino Strada,
director of the Italian ngo "Emergency," will speak about his
work and the
escalating toll that armed conflict everywhere is taking on civilian
populations: the denial of medical care (pre-, during- and post-conflict)
destroys hope, renders entire peoples helpless and is a key tactical,
albeit
inhumane, "weapon" when waging conflicts of any kind.
Dr.
Strada will receive an Honorary Degree during Colorado College Commencement
on May 22nd. He was a Nobel Peace Prize nominee, and is known throughout
the
world for his 20-years experience in war surgery and the work of "Emergency,"
which runs over 56 hospitals, clinics and first-aid posts, plus community-
development programs, in countries torn apart by conflict such as Iraq,
Afghanistan, Sierra Leone, Sudan, Cambodia.
