Colorado College alumni, students and parents
in Portland

The Colorado College Portland Alumni Club invites you to
a Sauvie Island Hike, Picnic and Ice Cream Social
in honor of the Class of 2011!

Please join us to connect with CC students
of the past, present and future!

Complementing the already large number of CC alumni in the Portland/Vancouver region, this year the area is sending an especially large contingent of new students—24—so we hope you can join us and send the incoming students off in style!

Sunday, August 12, 2007
Hike & Picnic: 10:30 a.m.
Ice Cream Social: 2 p.m.

We’ll begin with a hike along the Columbia River to the Warrior Rock Lighthouse on Sauvie Island in Northwest Portland, where we’ll stop for a picnic lunch. We’ll eat lunch near the site of the now-abandoned lighthouse at the tip of the island. After we hike out, we’ll reconvene at the Ben & Jerry’s Scoop Shop at NW 23rd Avenue and Burnside to cool down with ice cream cones and shakes. The ice cream treats are on Colorado College!

Everyone is welcome to attend both the hike and the ice cream social afterwards, or just one or the other. We encourage families (including siblings and young children) to attend, too.

RSVP to Bill Porter ’90 at (503) 335-8833 or bill.porter@earthlink.net

DETAILS

Hike:
For the hike, meet at 10:30 a.m. in the parking lot of the Sauvie Island Market. We’ll carpool the final 15 miles to the trailhead on the north side of the island, and Colorado College will provide the needed trailhead parking passes there. To get to Sauvie Island, take U.S. Highway 30 west from
I-405. At 10 miles, turn right to cross over the Sauvie Island bridge. The Sauvie Island Market is on your left, 0.1 miles beyond the end of the bridge. Depending on the water level (which should be low at this time of year), we’ll walk along the beach of the Columbia River. The 3.5 mile hike (7 miles roundtrip) is flat and easy; plump blackberry vines and views of Mt. St. Helens and Columbia River traffic will be part of the attraction. Since we’ll aim to spend at least some of our time on the beach, consider wearing sandals or shoes you can get wet.

Lunch:
We’ll eat lunch near the site of the now-abandoned lighthouse at the tip of the island, so pack a picnic lunch and bring plenty of water to drink. The hike to the lighthouse should take between 1-1.5 hours. We’ll aim to hike out and return to the trailhead by about 1:30.

Ice Cream Social:
For the ice cream social, we’ll aim to arrive at Ben & Jerry’s by about 2 p.m. The location of the store is 39 NW 23rd in the Uptown Center
(phone: (503) 295–3033).
The treats are on Colorado College!
