What's behind the mania for abbreviations and invented
words? In offices, companies, and--yes--colleges, there's a special shorthand
language for people in the know. We use the language to save time, and
we expect people to understand the references without translation. Abbreviations
in public discourse can play a different role. Because they stand for
words we'd rather not hear or say, they disguise harsh realities.
