Good Wars, Bad Wars: Can War in Iraq and the Middle East Be
Just or Good?
Wars have been endemic in human affairs. They have caused untold death,
destruction and misery. Can horrible, destructive war ever be thought
to be "good?" Are we justified in talking about war in moral
terms, or is morality only a veneer for the exercise of national power
and the use of violence? What are justifications for going to war in
today's world? In the new world of terrorism and terrible weapons, is
preventive war or preemptive war just? Can we speak about the present
war in Iraq and the war against terrorism in moral terms? Do the old
Just War Rules still apply in the terribly dangerous modern world? These
are some of the questions we will discuss in our session.
