A Word from Prof. Popkin

Now in its second year, the course "Globalization and Immigration on the U.S.-Mexican Border" begins on the Colorado College campus, where we spend several sessions reading about the history of the border region and considering recent theory on Latino immigration and globalization. We then travel to southern Arizona and from there to Nogales, Alta and Sasabe in Mexico. Visits to these areas enable students to learn more about the conditions that drive migrants from their home communities and the difficulties they confront as they attempt to cross the border and find work in the United State. Many migrants die in the desert in this process. Upon returning to Colorado College, students analyze various theoretical propositions concerning border militarization while preparing a public presentation. This course, which is cross-listed between Sociology and Southwest Studies, represents the kind of unique learning experience made possible by Colorado College's block plan.
