In this lecture, Professor Hendrickson explores contemporary American strategy through the use of a bodily metaphor--examining the mind (the coherence of the Bush strategic doctrine); the arms (the uses and limits of military power); the legs (U.S. economic well-being and endurance); the heart (the perceived legitimacy of U.S. power); and the breath (what the Chinese call "chi"), used here as a metaphor for the influence of political culture on American external conduct.

David Hendrickson is Robert J. Fox Distinguished Service Professor at Colorado College. He is the author of six books, including most recently Peace Pact: The Lost World of the American Founding (2003). He graduated from Colorado College in 1976.
