The Ancient Mexican Ballgame: A Sport of Life and Death

Presented by Dr. Jane Stevenson Day ’51

Team sports played with a bouncing rubber ball had their origin in ancient Mesoamerica over 3000 years ago. The game was played both as an exiting spectator sport and as a ritual performance that pitted two teams against each other in an effort to influence the unpredictable forces of the natural world. This innovative concept of playing as a team rather than an individual began in the New World and after the Spanish conquest in 1521 quickly spread throughout Europe. Our elaborate team sports of today still reflect the rules, action and accoutrements of the ancient Americas
