| LOUIS T. BENEZET AWARD RECIPIENT
2004 |
Maude Southwell Wahlman '69
Maude was an art major at CC, graduating in 1969.
She went on to Northwestern University, earning masters degrees
in both anthropology and art history, then to Yale for her PhD
in art history. She is an endowed professor of global arts at
the University of Missouri – Kansas City, focusing on African
quilt art. She has established a new field of study that examines
the African-derived meanings, patterns, and iconography of quilting.
Her work has shown that African-American quilts are neither as
precise nor as repetitive as the quilts European-American women
make. She calls quilts the “visual equivalent of jazz music.”
We’re hoping to be able to offer a book signing during Homecoming
of Maude’s recently re-published book, Signs and Symbols.
