Benediction by Bruce Coriell,
Colorado College Chaplain,
at the college convocation celebrating the
125th anniversary of its charter
February 9, 1999 — Shove Chapel

We have gathered as people of the tiger
Our mascot, an animal unfamiliar to the mountains and plains of Colorado,
Come from the East, a symbol of what we have received
from Western tradition -- our place of beginning and belonging.

125 years later, we are lead by the Barong, tiger of the East,
come to us from the far West.
An ancient tradition which shows us a new way,
in which East indwells West,
and West engages East
just as the past points to the future
and the future relies upon the past.

We are people of the tiger
proud and strong
wily and supple
Not simply East or West
Not merely past or future
We are people of the tiger
Here   and   Now

Spirit of the tiger,
guide and protect
animate and inspire

So that in 125 years,
when we gather again for our 250th anniversary
we will gather again as clan of the tiger.
